Il padre Battistel ha frequentato la scuola apostolica di Trento e quella di Albino. Ha fatto la sua prima professione ad Albisola il 29.09.1949 e ha fatto il liceo a Monza. A Bologna ha frequentato il corso teologico ed è stato ordinato sacerdote a Trento il 28 giugno 1958.
Due anni dopo era in Portogallo, dove passa diverse case (Madera, Coimbra, Lisbona e poi di nuovo a Madera dove viene fatto vicerettore). Intanto giunge a maturazione il suo desiderio, coltivato fin da bambino, di andare missionario in Mozambico. Scrive al p. provinciale il 13.12.1964: "Per il Santo Natale chiederei a Gesù e a Lei un regalo: di andare in missione. » un desiderio che ho sempre avuto, sospirato e ora faccio la domanda: Sempre ho amato le missioni ed i missionari, nei due anni circa che ho passato a Lisbona mi sono dato sempre volentieri per i missionari". Scrive anche al p. regionale del Mozambico perchè la sua domanda venga accolta.
Nel 1965 viene accontentato e parte per il Mozambico dove rimane fino al 1969, dedicandosi alla formazione dei catechisti. Ma poi è costretto, per motivi di salute, a rientrare in Italia.
Dal 1970 al 1987 è a Trento, casa S. Cuore, dove si dedica alla formazione dei ragazzi e al ministero. Intanto, fin dal 1971, ha cominciato a manifestarsi una grave malattia depressiva che lo accompagnerà, con periodi alterni, fino alla fine. Il padre chiede di passare dei lunghi periodi in famiglia per una cura più intensa ed efficace.
Scrive al p. provinciale il 10 dicembre 1984: "Il mio stato di salute è sempre precario: stato molto ansioso, depressione a giorni molto accentuata, paura e indecisione nelle mie azioni, sfuggo il contatto con le persone e do solo un saluto. Mi sento protetto dall'ambiente familiare che ormai mi conoscono e mi sono di grande aiuto morale e di incoraggiamento".
Dal 1987 al 1994 è a Bolognano, dove tiene compagnia ai padri anziani e malati e si dedica (nei periodi di stabilità della salute) alla animazione missionaria della zona. Passa poi a Mussolente nel 1994, ma già nel 1995 è costretto a ritornare a Bolognano, come padre bisognoso di cure. Resterà in questa casa fino al 13 novembre 2001 in cui, in un momento di più forte crisi depressiva, avviene la sua tragica fine.
Il padre ha dimostrato sempre un grande amore per i confratelli e la Congregazione che ha cercato di servire secondo le sue possibilità e in piena obbedienza. Quando la malattia gli dava un po' di tregua, era gioviale ed aperto, pronto alla battuta scherzosa e al sorriso. Grandissima la sua devozione alla Madonna.

Fr. Battistel studied at our minor seminary in Trento and then in Albino. He made his first profession on September 29, 1949 and received his university degree from Monza. He studied theology at Bologna and was ordained a priest at Trento on June 28, 1958.
Two years later he was sent to Portugal where he worked in several houses (Madera, Coimbra, Lisbon and then returned to Madera where he served as vice-rector. Ever since he was a little boy he wanted to become a missionary. On December 13, 1964, he wrote to the provincial: "For Christmas I have asked Jesus for a gift: that I may become a missionary. It is something I have always wanted to be and have frequently prayed that the Lord grant me a love for the missions and missionaries. For the last two years when I've passed through Lisbon I have made my desire for the missions known." He also wrote to the regional superior in Mozambique asking that his request be heard.
In 1965 his wish was granted and he left for Mozambique where he stayed until the end of 1969 working in the formation of catchiest. At the end of '69 he was forced to return to Italy for reasons of health.
From 1970 to 1987 he was in Trento at Sacred Heart House where he worked in the minor seminary formation program. However in 1971 he began to suffer from sever depression and finally had to ask that he spend an extended period with his family to undergo intensive therapy.
He wrote to the provincial on December 10, 1984: "My healthy is always a bit precarious. I am very anxious and frequently very depressed. I am fearful and indecisive in my actions, and shy away from people shortly after greeting them. I feel most comfortable in a familiar setting and among those I know well. They are a great help and encouragement to me."
From 1987 to 1994 he was at Bolognano where he was among the old and infirm scjs and dedicated himself when his health permitted to mission animation in the region. In 1994 he was transferred to Mussolente, but the following year he returned to Bologanano as one in need of care. He remained there until November 13, 2001, where in a time of deep depression he died.
Fr. Battistel had a great love for his fellow scjs and the congregation which he tried to serve in a spirit of obedience. When his depression was in remission he was jovial, open and loved to joke and laugh. He had a great devotion to Our Blessed Lady.
