AT THE SCJ NORTH AMERICAN ASSEMBLY

Dear Confreres,

To all of you I bring fraternal and cordial greetings: my personal greetings to each and every one of you; greetings also from the General Administration, from the general curia, and from the community of Rome.

I also want to express my joy at being here. Right from the beginning of the preparation of this assembly -- two years ago -- I was invited to take part in it. I gladly accepted the invitation for several reasons:

• First, because this meeting is the very first of its kind in the whole Congregation, that is, a meeting that brings together all the confreres of an SCJ geographical region.
• Secondly, because this meeting is a way to the actualize the spirit of the project We the Congregation at the Service of the Mission within the concrete reality of North America.
• Thirdly, because during this six year term of office the General Administration would prefer to be present for community meetings, both provincial and regional, rather than by other forms of visiting.
• And finally, because I am happy to return to Hales Corners, the heart of the US Province, where I have always felt welcome, and where I can deepen my understanding and appreciation of your culture.

This meeting is just a step, or a day, on this journey to be undertaken under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I see it as an important time to cultivate the heart. It is a time to increase dialogue, a time to expand reciprocal relationships, a time to deepen mutual understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of one another, and a time to strengthen the Sint Unum which is the expression and the basis of our fraternity in Christ. Indeed, the first objective of "We the Congregation..." is to achieve "one heart and one soul." The rest will follow by itself.

By our presence here, Fr. Tom Cassidy and I also want to be a sign of communion with all the rest of the Congregation. The whole Congregation is present in your reunion here. Together we form one body, one family, rooted in our common heritage from Fr. Dehon. We find the source of our unity and identity in the same vocation and the same mission, even though our way of life and activity may differ.

I, therefore, wish to all of you days filled with joy and growth in such a way that our sense of belonging to the Congregation is intensified, as well as our disponibility to the salvific will of the Lord.

Special thanks to Frs. John Czyzynski, Peter McKenna, and Maurice Légaré for their invitation. Thanks to all who were involved in the preparation of this meeting, and to those who are working to make it a success for all. And thanks, too, to the Hales Corners community, our hosts.

Cordial greetings, finally, to all our confreres and to all the other people who are present with us here. May the Holy Spirit continue to work wonders in our midst.

A tutti voi io porgo cordiali e fraterni saluti: il mio augurio a tutti e a ciascuno di voi; e anche i saluti del Direttivo Generale, della curia generale e della comunità di Roma.

Voglio anche esprimere la mia gioia di essere qui. Fin dall'inizio della preparazione di questa assemblea - due anni - sono stato invitato a parteciparvi. Ho accolto con gioia l'invito per diverse ragioni:

• Primo, perché questo incontro è il primo in assoluto nel suo genere in tutta la Congregazione, cioè un incontro che riunisce insieme tutti i confratelli SCJ di una regione geografica.
• Secondo, perché questo incontro è un modo per attualizzare lo spirito del progetto Noi Congregazione al servizio della Missione nel contesto della realtà concreta del Nord America.
• Terzo, perché durante questi sei anni di mandato il Direttivo Generale preferisce essere presente agli incontri comunitari, provinciali e regionali, piuttosto che altre forme di visita.
• E infine perché sono felice di ritornare ad Hales Corners, il cuore della provincia US, dove mi sono sempre sentito accolto e dove posso approfondire la mia conoscenza e il mio apprezzamento per la vostra cultura.

Questo incontro è solo un passo, o un giorno di questo cammino che deve essere affrontato insieme sotto la guida dello Spirito Santo. Io lo vedo come un tempo importante per far crescere il cuore. È un tempo di dialogo crescente, un tempo per espandere le reciproche relazioni, un tempo per approfondire la comprensione reciproca, l'apprezzamento e l'accettazione gli uni degli altri, e un tempo per rinforzare il Sint Unum che è l'espressione e la base della nostra fraternità in Cristo. Certamente, il primo obiettivo del "Noi Congregazione…" è il realizzare "un cuore e un'anima sola". Il resto verrà da solo.

Con la nostra presenza, di P. Tom Cassidy e mia, vogliamo essere un segno di comunione con il resto della Congregazione. L'intera Congregazione è presente nel vostro incontro di oggi. Insieme formiamo un solo corpo, una sola famiglia, fondata sulla nostra comune eredità di P. Dehon. Troviamo la sorgente della nostra unità e identificazione nella stessa vocazione e nella stessa missione, anche se il nostro modo di vita e la nostra attività è differente.

Auguro perciò a tutti voi dei giorni pieni di gioia e di crescita in modo tale che il nostro senso di apparteneza alla Congregazione sia intensificato, insieme con la nostra disponibilità alla volontà salvifica del Signore.

Speciali ringraziamenti ai Padri John Czyzynski, Peter McKenna e Maurice Légaré per il loro invito. Grazie a tutti coloro che hanno preparato l'incontro, e a tutti quelli che stanno lavorando per il successo di tutto. E grazie anche alla comunità di Hales Corners, che ci ha ospitati.

Cordiali saluti infine a tutti i confratelli e a tutte le persone che sono qui presenti. Possa lo Spirito Santo continuare a compiere meraviglie in mezzo a noi.

Para todos ustedes traigo un fraternal y cordial saludo: mis saludos personales a todos y cada uno de ustedes; los saludos también de la Administración General, de la curia general, y de la comunidad de Roma.

También quiero expresar mi alegría de estar aquí. Justo desde el principio de la preparación de esta asamblea--hace dos años-- fui invitado a tomar parte en ella. Acepté la invitación alegremente por varias razones:

• Primero, porque esta reunión es el muy primero de su tipo en la Congregación entera, es decir, una reunión que reúne a todos los cohermanos SCJ de una región geográfica.
• Segundo, porque esta reunión es una manera de actualizar el espíritu del proyecto ¡Nosotros Congregación al servicio de la misión dentro de la realidad concreta de América del Norte.
• En tercer lugar, porque durante estos seis año de la Administración General preferiría estar presente para las reuniones de la comunidad, provinciales y/o regionales, en lugar de hacer otras formas de visitas.
• Y finalmente, porque estoy contento de volver Hales Corners, el corazón de la Provincia norteamericana, donde siempre me he sentido bienvenido, y donde yo puedo ahondar mi comprensión y apreciación de su cultura.

Esta reunión es justo un paso, o un día, en esta jornada para ser emprendido bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. Lo veo como un tiempo importante para cultivar el corazón. Es un tiempo para aumentar diálogo, un tiempo para extender las relaciones recíprocas, un tiempo para ahondar comprensión mutua, apreciación, y aceptación mututa, y un tiempo para fortalecer el Sint Unum que es la expresión y las bases de nuestra fraternidad en Cristo. De hecho, el primer objetivo de "Nosotros la Congregación..." es lograr "un corazón y una alma." El resto seguirá por sí mismo.

Por nuestra presencia aquí, el P. Tom Cassidy y yo también queremos ser una señal de comunión con todo el resto de la Congregación. La Congregación entera está presente en su reunión aquí. Juntos formamos un cuerpo, una familia, arraigada en nuestra herencia común del P. Dehon. Encontramos la fuente de nuestra unidad e identidad en la misma vocación y la misma misión, aunque nuestro estilo de vida y actividad pueden diferir.

Yo, por consiguiente, desee a todos ustedes días llenos de alegría y crecimiento de tal manera que nuestro sentido de pertenencia a la Congregación se intensifique, así como nuestra disponibilidad a la voluntad salvífica del Señor.

Especial gracias a los PP. John Czyzynski, Peter McKenna, y Maurice Lègarè por su invitación. Gracias a todos que están involucrados en la preparación de esta reunión, y a aquéllos que están trabajando por hacerla un éxito para todos. Y gracias, también, a la comunidad de Hales Corners, nuestros anfitriones.
