Fakten: Mgr. Antono Cosa, gebürtiger Rumäne, Jahrgang 1961, Priesterweihe 1989, 1993 zum apostolischen Administrater von Moldawien ernannt; Moldawien: 4,38 Mill. Einwohner, 20 000 Katoliken (0,5 %), 14 Priester (davon 5 Dehonianer), 21 Ordensfrauen

Mgr.

The facts: Mgr. Antono Cosa, native Romanian, born in 1961, ordained to the priesthood in 1989, Apostolic Administrator of Moldavia since 1993; Moldavia: 4.38 Mill. inhabitants, 20,000 Catholics (0.5 %), 14 priests (of which 5 are Dehonians), 21 sisters.

Mgr. Antono Cosa, how can you explain that you, a Romanian, became Apostolic Administrator of Moldavia?

Before the collapse of the Ceaucesco regime in Romania, no one could imagine that one day it would be possible to leave Romania to work and live in another country. After the collapse of communism my bishop (diocese of Jasi/Romania) recieved a letter from Moldavia asking for priests. When he asked me I told him: "If you tell me to go, I will go." And so I went to Moldavia.

Being only 38 years old you are rather young for such a charge.

In fact this is something that concerned me from the beginning. Indeed I am very young and I have only limited experience. Often I feel anxious not to be up to the responsibility of building a new Church district in Moldavia.

Which are the greatest challenges for you in Moldavia?

Having in mind that we are a very small minority, I would like the Catholics to become visible in our society as a vibrant Church, i.e. a Church with convinced members, with vocations to the priesthood and religious life, attentive to the signs of the time. The latter means in Moldavia that we particularly dedicate ourselves to social problems. Our social-caritative commitment within the Moldavian society should testify our faith.

From the beginning of my work in Moldavia, one of the greatest challenges was the search for an ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox Church. It is very difficult! Therefore it was of great importance that I was invited recently to an Orthodox service followed by a fraternal agape-meal.

And the challenges within the Catholic Church?

In our Church there are two groups of Catholics: First of all, those who remained faithful to the Church and its faith in the period of communism, partly even persecuted. They often live a very simple faith, strongly united with their Church, with the Holy Father and their priests. But often it is also a very narrow kind of faith. They do not want any explanation about their faith. The second group of Catholics are those who only recently confess their faith, who didn’t move in during the communist period. Now they come to us, ask for baptism and are prepared for this during a one year catechumenat. These Catholics have a much better religious formation then those mentioned earlier. The challenge consists in living reconciled together and to build one Church. To be honest, often the divine virtues are missing, especially the love of God and Neighbor.

In addition to this, the religious feeling of those Catholics who resisted communism -- to whom we are infinitely thankful -- is offen mixed with nationalistic aspects. They often link their affiliation to the Church with their affiliation to a precise ethnic group. For them it is unimaginable to pray together with a Russian, Romanian, Moldavian [N.B. Most Catholics in Moldavia are of Polish origin].

In this special context I often think of the parable in Luke 15 and the problems the two very different sons have in their relationship. This parable is our challenge.

Is there an interest in the Catholic Church in Moldavia?

Indeed there are many people in our country who are searching for God and who find their way to us. They find a language they understand and put a face to God which responds to their desires - a face full of confidence and love. And together with this the testimony of our Church is very convincing.

Doesn't this lead to conflicts with the Orthodox Church?

Well, the people mentioned above don’t come in thousands, also because we are ourselves only a very, very small minority. Perhaps also because of this, we haven’t so far had any major problems with the Orthodox Church. We don’t 'recruit' people from the Orthodox Church, it is quite the opposite: If someone comes to us, who doesn‘t feel at home any longer in the Orthodox Church, we try to convince them to turn back to their Church, we tell them: You should become the bridge between Catholics and Orthodoxes. You should contribute so that your Church becomes vital again.

Does this religious re-orientation also have to do with the social situation in Moldavia?

For sure, for many people nearly everything broke down. They lost so much, their hopes as well as their money. The health system is completely insufficient, the pensions are often only disbursed - if at all -- when they have already lost 50% of their value. The political instability in the country promotes the black market and the Mafia. Perhaps people don't die of hunger, but they sure suffer from it a lot.

Do you have dreams for the Catholic Church in Moldavia?

My general goal is that Moldavian society in many different areas is supported by the Catholic Church. I have the dream to open in the future an institute for communication and publishing. I have the dream that our Church will become more dedicated to dealing with the social problems, especially medical assistance. Concerning consecrated people/religious people I have the dream, that they can develop their specific charism, in order not so much to support the Church, but the whole society - where the society needs them.

Intervista a Mons. Antono Cosa
Amministratore Apostolico in Moldavia

I fatti: Mons.
