There are two ways to get enough: One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less. -- G. K. Chesterton

What's New

As we continue preparations for next year's General Conference on the Theme The Economy and the Kingdom of God we will present a short thought for the week on justice, especially as it relates to economic justice. Quotes are most welcome. Since your editor is an English Speaker they'll tend to come from that language/tradition unless assisted by our audience.

The letter to the congregation from Fr. General and Umberto Chiarello (CU) on their recent visit to the South Italian Province is published here in English and the original Italian, the French version will follow shortly (CF Visit to IM). Note this letter in all three languages will also be posted to the Letters and Documents section.

Fr. Tom Garvey recently wrote that the SCJs in India current have 98 seminarians. There are two in vows, one of whom is doing his pastoral year at the minor seminary. The novitiate has three novices who are currently finishing up a month at an inter-community novitiate program for men and women (the program includes 86 novices this year). Following the inter-community program, the novices and Fr. Sebastian Pitz, novice master, will join the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart for a 30-day retreat.

News from South Dakota

Fr. Tom Westhoven in Eagle Butte writes that "we had our first snow of the season today -- 5 inches. It was melting as I led the funeral procession from All Saints Church in Eagle Butte to the old St. Mary's Cemetery in LaPlant. As I turned off the highway onto the mile-long dirt road leading to the cemetery, I began slipping and sliding. I made it through the first bad spot, but the second one did me in. I was hopelessly mired down. As I looked back, I could see the hearse spun sideways in the first bad spot along with several cars and trucks. We all had to be pulled back to the main highway by four-wheel drive vehicles. We then drove to the paved parking lot of the local school for the final prayers. The casket was transferred to a four-wheel drive pickup and selected family members took another vehicle for the actual burial. What an ending for our fifth funeral in less than two weeks!"
