What's New

The Justice & Peace report from the Argentine-Uruguary Province has been posted to the J&P Province page. It can also be accessed directly from here in four languages (English, French, Portuguese and Italian)

The vocation departments of North America have established a web site at www.sintunum.org. It first went on line November 8th and is now 'officially' open and has been added to our links page. The site has been added to our links section. For those who appreciated Fr. Yost's Sunday Advent meditations from last year they are being repeated (along with meditations for each weekday) on this server.

Daily meditations for the Season of Advent, prepared by Fr. Charles Yost, SCJ, will be available at this site. The meditations will be uploaded on a weekly basis and will be available by noon (cst) the preceding Saturday. The meditations for the First Week of Advent will be available on Saturday, November 28. A link will be posted here when they are available.

Br. Jerry Selenke is recovering from cancer surgery in Hales Corners. Many in the congregation know him for his work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He recently obtained an email address for those who might be interested in contacting him: gSelenke@compuserve.com.

What's Happening

Sacred Heart School of Theology Library (Hales Corners) is participating in SWITCH (Southeastern Wisconsin Information Technology Exchange). The following is taken from the November issue of Alumni Connections, a publication of Sacred Heart School of Theology.

Our library has entered the on-line age! In November the Leo Dehon Library catalog will be changing from the familiar, much-thumbed cards to an on-line version, available to alumni via the Internet or direct dial-up connections.

SHST joined the SWITCH consortium consisting of seven academic institutions in the Milwaukee area: Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Concordia University Wisconsin, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Mount Mary College, Wisconsin Lutheran College and SHST. The libraries share a catalog and deliver system which means, a student, faculty, or staff member from one school can borrow materials from any other school in the consortium.

The following is from the Fridge Notes (a publication of the North American SCJs under the sponsorship of the US Province).

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of St. Paul University in Ottawa, Fr. Herman Falke, of the Anglo-Canadian Province, was commissioned to create a 98" by 33" woodcarving. Fr. Herman unveiled the art with Archbishop Gervais at the kick-off of anniversary celebrations in the fall. The carving pictured Paul preaching the "Unknown God" at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens. Please Remember

We received the following obituary for Fr. Samuel Testa (IS) who died on 22 November 1998 at Savoniero, Italy (cf. News for November 28).

Born in 1919, in Canonica d'Adda, Italy, and ordained in 1944, he first was a teacher in Castiglione dei Pepoli and Monza. He was very popular among staff and students and his interest in sports and his joyful character earned him recognition from CONI.

In 1971, at the age of 51, he volunteered for the Congo. In Lingondo (1971-1973) and later in Nduye-Mambasa, he dedicated himself to schools and sports. He created "Les jeux de l'amitié" (the games of friendship) involving the schools of the region.

In 1985 he was operated on for stomach difficulties but returned to the Congo and remained until 1996. In 1997 he underwent a heart operation. At 79, he accepted being parish priest in the small town of Italy, Savoniero, where he collapsed on Sunday morning (November 22nd) just before Mass.
