European Youth Gathering

Eight European provinces are planning a youth gathering this August in Foligno, Italy. Scheduled for August 3-8 it is projected some 150 to 200 young people will attend from nine provinces: Portugal, Spain, France, British-Irish, Germany, Poland, the two Italian Provinces, plus the region of Finland. A more detailed account in Italian can be found by linking to: MEETING GIOVANI DEHONIANI D'EUROPA 1998, an outline prepared by Italo Rocchi (IM) in preparation for the youth encounter.

Rome I at Easter Time

The Rome I community's Easter celebration is usually a low key affair. Most of the students spend the Easter Tridium in parishes scattered throughout Italy (from Venice in the north to Sicily in the South). As a consequence, it is a small band of faithful who gather for the celebrations from Holy Thursday through Easter Monday. In Italy Easter Monday (pasquetta) is a holiday, and is 'almost' as big as Easter itself.

Antonio Augusto Teixeria (LU) has taken over both the sacristy and care of house plants this academic school year. Even though he was in Canada to preach a Lenten retreat the community benefited from his green thumb talents -- note the 'Christmas' connection in the floral decorations.

Final plans for the chapel remodeling (last to be done as part of the Roma I project) are now being drawn up. The plans envision three chapels: Main, Eucharistic and Ongoing-formation (5th floor west wing).

Caritas Finland & the SCJs

Caritas Finland (Soumen Caritas), founded in 1960 and a member of Caritas International, concentrates primarily on development aid work outside of Finland, and refugee work domestically. In an information bulletin published by the organization it highlighted among its projects funded in recent years two activities of our Philippine scjs.
A 'pig project' designed to finance the education of Filipino children: The children were given pigs to raise and with the profit acquired by selling them, paid for their own education.

Construction of a grain storage for a cooperative in the Philippines; purchase of a thresher for the village of Kumalarangi.

Did you know?

James Horner, who won two Oscars at the '98 awards ceremony last month for the music from the motion picture TITANIC (best score for a dramatic film & best song My Heart Will Go On), has a connection to the scjs? In 1996 he wrote the score to the film THE SPITFIRE GRILL produced by Gregory Productions, a media ministry of the US scjs in Northern Mississippi (Sacred Heart League).
