From Rome January 25, 1998

An artist in residence

Dehon House on Daly Avenue is home to the Anglo Canadian Ottawa scj community. A mix group of retired and active scjs, it counts among its members Fr. Herman Falke (CA). Herman came to Canada in the 1950s along with other Dutch scjs to serve the large influx of immigrants arriving from Holland after World War II. He has served in London, Delaware, Uxbridge, and Toronto, in addition to Ottawa and several years in central Africa.

Currently he is pastor of Osgoode-Manotick parish just south of the city of Ottawa. Herman is an accomplished artist and former art teacher. Much of his time away from parish duties is spent in his basement studio on Daly Street. Perhaps best known for his sculptures, his works have appeared on the cover of Living with Christ, a monthly liturgical publication in Canada and the United States, in addition to numerous shows and retrospectives in Canada and elsewhere.

Herman has been commissioned to create numerous pieces of sacred art for local churches, including several Stations of the Cross. He created a wooden relief of the logo We the Congregation for the XXth General Chapter. At the moment he is preparing to return to Italy this summer to continue his long term relationship with the Dante Art Festival held biannually in Ravena.

Comings and goings

Fr. General and Ryszard Mis (CU) returned to Rome from their month long visit to The Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), while Wardjito (CU) departed Rome on January 15, 1998 for visits to Indonesia and The Philippines. An important aspect of the visit to his home province will be the consultation for a new Indonesian provincial administration scheduled to take office on July 15, 1998. Fr. Anthony Yuswito (IN) is completing his first term as provincial.

Please remember

At the suggestion of Fr. Claudio Siebenaler (CU), general secretary, we are adding the necrology to the news page. We will post the death notice as they are published by the general secretary, and then link them to a necrology page which will be posted next week.

The first death in the congregation for 1998 occurred on January 19, 1998. Please remember in your prayers Fr. Joseph Bettendorf (LW), a former missionary in the Congo (Zaire) and mission procurator.
