INTRODUCTION

During his long association with the students of St. John's College in San Quentin, first as Superior and later as priest and friend of those who were his students, Fr. Dehon participated in all the meetings with former students until 1924.

What he offers is much like On-going Formation. What did he teach them? These meetings and lessons, which appear in the chronicles of these meetings of the alumni, will inform us of what especially was his intention since the establishment of St. John's Institute in San Quentin with the formation of the youth in that city.

I hope this small work will help, with Fr. Dehon's example, to guide our work and commitment with today's youth in our formation programs.

In Conclusion

In the first place, attention was given to the great esteem that the alumni had for Fr. Dehon, their elderly Superior and professor. Some still considered him the Superior of the College. For others, he was TEACHER in capital letters. He is seen as an untiring worker, austere thinker, with the fire of an apostle. His personality reflects what it means to be a priest at the end of the 19th century and from his work, the SOCIAL CHRISTIAN MANUAL. They value his love for humble people. He has given all of himself: his fortune, strength, and freedom that no one could deny. He is a man of optimism. No difficulty weakens him. He is also a MAN OF PRAYER. The alumni appreciate his visits to them and his attendance at their annual meetings in spite of his busy schedule.

Fr. Dehon knows how to capture his listeners. His wisdom comes from the heart. After listening to him, one responds like to disciples on the road to Emmaus, "Were not our hearts burning within us as we conversed with him?" This point made some people compare him to the famous Fenelon. The two points of his discourses are God and Country. Similarly in his teachings at the College were the two great loves at heart- Christ and France.

On one side was the theme of religious persecution for schools without God and the expulsion of the religious. The other point was the sad case of the working class. This reality, in great part, was due to the fault of these French Catholics who remain attached to respectable traditions that were out-dated. This same group did not know how to understand and listen to the legitimate aspirations of the public who sought participation and political equality, freedom to gather groups, and social reforms. We should note lose hope. Fr. Dehon was a man of hope, who believed in better days ahead. France would recover. Like nature, a new sun shines after the storm. His foundation of hope is rooted in the national pride of France in its brilliant history, especially through figures like Sts. Louis and Joan of Arc.

He believes in the youth. The Church possesses salvation and she alone can resolve social issues. He confides in the orientation of Pope Leo XIII, orientations rooted in the Gospel. This Gospel introduced to our world the ideas for moral progress, fraternity, and solidarity. Only the Gospel has the power to put these values into practice. What is Christian and a sign of hope will eliminate all that is pessimistic and hopeless. With the breathing spirit of love, whose fountain is the Heart of Christ, France's spirit will be renewed. Already there are signs of recovery. Some people recognize that Society is mistaken and will return to the Church. They understand that Catholicism will not fail in giving serenity or providing the logic that is needed for understanding. Now is the time for action. All of the circumstances are in our favor. Fr. Dehon invites the Alumni to put their hands to work. This is what God wants!! They must imitate the example of Judas Machabees and his disciples as well as the knights of the Crusades.

Today there is no need to liberate the tomb of Christ, an empty tomb. But there is a need to free the same Christ who lives in the poor. One cannot abandon the ship that is agitated by the waves. But all can join in the effort!! It is precisely to recapture the esteem, trust, and feeling of the people. They have received from Christ their fortune and talent. Put these gifts at the disposal and benefit of the people and for the benefit of their faith.

Their duty in the present age is to unite, study, and to act. Live an irreproachable life as committed Christians fighting for the freedom of teaching, involvement in social action, and prayer. It is not necessary to be revolutionary but to be decisively active.

His best talk is given on September 8, 1907. He offers many details not found elsewhere. It is interesting how he speaks of his audience with Pius X. This date is also important in that it marks the fourth anniversary of Leo XIII's death. We observe that Fr. Dehon has not abandoned his interest in social issues and continues his apostolate with the humble when the climate is right. Attention is also given to the social discourse given by Fr. Delloue to the alumni in 1894. They cannot remain indifferent to the great social problems. Those who are obligated to give donations are an exception. This presentation offers us details on the social work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society done by the older students at St. John's.

The final pages inform us about St. John's and the importance that Fr. Dehon gave to its spiritual and family atmosphere. He believes the Institute is in good hands and presents itself as a sign of hope.

El P. Dehon durante su larga vida con los alumnos del Colegio S. Juan de S. Quintín, primero como Superior, y después como Padre y amigo de quienes habían sido sus discípulos participando en todas las asambleas que los antiguos alumnos realizaron hasta 1924.

Lo que él hace es como una Formación Permanente, ¿qué es lo que les iba enseñando?

Estas orientaciones y enseñanzas, que aparecen en las crónicas de estas asambleas de antiguos alumnos, nos lo irán diciendo, especialmente lo que él pretendió con la fundación del Instituto de San Juan en San Quintín, a través de la formación de la juventud de aquella ciudad.

Espero que este pequeño trabajo pueda ayudar, a ejemplo del P. Dehon, a orientar nuestro quehacer y compromiso con los jóvenes de hoy en nuestros centros de formación.

A modo de conclusión

Llama la atención, en primer lugar, la gran estima que los exalumnos tienen con el P. Dehon, su antiguo superior y maestro. Algunos continúan considerándolo superior del Colegio y así lo llaman, para otros es el Maestro con mayúsculas.

Es el trabajador infatigable, el pensador austero, con el fuego del apóstol. Refleja en su persona lo que ha de ser un sacerdote de fin de siglo y lo que él mismo señalara en su obra: "Manual Social Cristiano". Aprecian en él el amor por los humildes. Lo ha dado todo: fortuna, fuerzas, libertad con un desinterés que nadie ha podido negárselo. Es el hombre del optimismo. Ninguna dificultad lo desalienta. Es el hombre, también, de la oración. Aprecian el que los viene a visitar, que asiste a sus reuniones anuales a pesar de sus múltiples actividades, aparentemente mucho más importantes.

El P. Dehon sabe arrastrar a sus oyentes, pues sus consejos salen del corazón. después de haberlo escuchado se puede exclamar como los discípulos de Emaús: "¿No nos ardía el corazón cuando conversaba con nosotros?". Por eso algunos lo comparan con el ilustre Fenelon.

Los dos polos de sus discursos son Dios y la Patria, las mismas líneas de su educación, cuando estaba en el Colegio, que corresponden a los dos grandes amores que llevaba en el corazón: Cristo y Francia.

Y por un lado está la persecución religiosa con las escuelas sin Dios y la expulsión de los religiosos, por otro la triste situación de la clase obrera. Realidad que, en gran parte, es culpa de los mismos católicos franceses, porque permanecieron demasiado tiempo atados a tradiciones respetables pero ya superadas.

No se supo entender y escuchar las aspiraciones legítimas del pueblo que busca participación e igualdad política, libertad de asociación y reformas sociales.

No debemos desesperarnos. El P. Dehon es un hombre de esperanza, cree que vendrán días mejores. Francia se recuperará.

Como en la naturaleza, después de la tempestad, brilla de nuevo el sol. Fundamenta su esperanza en el temperamento nacional de los franceses, en la brillante historia de su pasado, especialmente en sus santos como S. Luis o Juana de Arco.

Cree también los jóvenes. Además es la Iglesia la que tiene la salvación, sólo ella puede resolver las cuestiones sociales. Confía en las orientaciones del Papa León XIII, fundamentadas en el Evangelio. Es el Evangelio el que ha introducido en el mundo las ideas del progreso moral, de la fraternidad y de la solidaridad. Sólo el Evangelio tiene la fuerza para poner en práctica estos valores. Lo que es cristiano y esperanza eliminará todo cuanto sea pesimismo y desesperación. Con el soplo del espíritu del amor, del que el Corazón de Jesús es la fuente, Francia se reanimará.

Hay ya ciertos signos de recuperación. Algunos letrados reconocen que la sociedad está equivocada y están dispuestos a volver a la Iglesia. Comprenden que al catolicismo no le faltan ni serenidad, ni lógica como se ha querido hacer entender.

Por eso es la hora de actuar. Todas las circunstancias están a nuestro favor. El P. Dehon invita a sus exalumnos a poner mano a la obra. ¡Dios lo quiere! Deben imitar el ejemplo de Judas Macabeo y sus seguidores, el de los caballeros de las Cruzadas.

Hoy no hay que liberar la tumba de Cristo, una tumba vacía, sino al mismo Cristo, el Cristo vivo entre los pobres.

No se puede abandonar el barco, agitado por las olas, sino que todos juntos han de actuar varonilmente. Es preciso reconquistar el aprecio, la confianza y el afecto del pueblo. Han recibido de Dios fortuna y talentos, deben ponerlos a disposición y beneficio del pueblo y su fe.

Sus deberes en el tiempo presente son la unión, el estudio y la acción. Deben vivir una vida irreprochable, ser cristianos comprometidos, luchar por la libertad de enseñanza, empeñarse en la acción social, y rezar. No es necesario ser revolucionarios sino decididamente activos.

Su mejor discurso es el del 8 septiembre 1907. Ofrece muchos detalles que no encontramos en otras partes. Interesante cuanto dice sobre su audiencia con Pío X. Además, por la fecha en que pronunciado es importante: a los cuatros años de la muerte de León XIII. Observamos que el P. Dehon no ha dejado su interés por la cuestión social y sigue su apostolado por los humildes cuando el ambiente le es favorable.

Llama la atención también el discurso social que hizo el P.Delloue a los exalumnos en 1894. No pueden desinteresarse de los grandes problemas sociales. Los que están obligados a recurrir a la limosna deben ser una excepción. Esta alocución nos ofrece también detalles sobre la labor social de la Conferencia de S. Vicente de Paúl que funcionaba entre los mayores del Colegio.

Las últimas páginas nos informan sobre la historia del Colegio y la importancia que el P. Dehon daba a la parte espiritual y al ambiente familiar.

Cree que está en buenas manos y por eso se manifiesta como lleno de esperanza.
 
 

Nei lunghi anni con gli studenti del Collegio S. Giovanni a S. Quintino, prima come Superiore e più tardi come prete ed amico di quelli che erano stati i suoi studenti, P. Dehon partecipò a tutte le riunioni dei primi studenti fino a 1924.

Quella che lui offre è molto simile ad una Formazione Permanente.. Cosa insegnò loro? Questi incontri e lezioni che appaiono nelle cronache delle riunioni degli ex-alunni ci fanno conoscere quella che in modo speciale era stata la sua intenzione fin dalla fondazione dell'Istituto S. Giovanni a S. Quintino con la formazione della gioventù in quella città.

Spero che questo piccolo lavoro aiuterà, sull'esempio di P. Dehon, a guidare il nostro lavoro ed impegno con la gioventù di oggi nei nostri corsi di formazione.

Era uma espécie de formação permanente para aqueles ex-alunos.
