What's New?

The Justice & Peace report from the Congo (Zaire) has been added to the Justitia et Pax web page. It can be directly accessed here by linking to J&P Congo. The English text is not available at this time, hopefully it will be posted in the next several weeks. The text is available in Italian and French.

A letter from Fr. General dated June 1st is available in French, Italian and English. We apologize for the tardy posting. It can be accessed by going to the Letters & Documents Section or linking here to Some News.

There are two corrections needed in the J&P report from Cameroon. One affects the English translation, the other the Italian. They come from Carlos Alberto da Costa Silva (CU) who wrote:

The first sentence says, that "the Province does not have anyone", the point is not "anyone", but "any institution, any structure, any building, school, etc.". In fact, Fr. B. Groux is in charge on "J&P". It means, there is someone.

The second bug, it was my mistake, I typed the text, or Chiarello's, who translated it. On the 8th line, the original in French has "pas scolarisés", the Italian text has: "no secolarizzati" instead of "no scuolarizzati". It resulted in English, "non-secular". (Cf. Cameroon.)

What's Happening?

On July 25, 1998, Andrew Tran (US) will be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph Potocnak (SA) at Sacred Heart Monastery/Sacred Heart School of Theology. Andrew is the first Native Born Vietnamese to be ordained in the Congregation.

This year's Summer ESL (English as a Second Language) has enrolled 20 students. This year the program welcomed SCJs from:

  1. Cameroon (2)
  2. Finland (1)
  3. General Curia (2)
  4. Indonesia (2)
  5. Poland (2)
  6. Portugal (2)
  7. South Brazil (1)
  8. South Italy (1)
In addition, two other religious communities have enrolled a student (Polish) in this year's program:
  1. Society of the Divine Savior (SDS)
  2. Congregation of the Mission (CM)
Finally, the US Province has a Vietnamese candidate from San Antonio, Texas enrolled. Two temporally professed scjs, Fra. David Szatkowski and Br. Duane Lemke are assisting Paul Reid, ESL coordinator and superior of the Sacred Heart Monastery community, in the day to day ESL activities.

Fr. Bill Pitcavage writes that his community has been a "house of hospitality" in recent days, with several visitors passing through: "Fr. Zolile Mpambani returned from his trip to Mozambique with Fr. General. He will be with us for a time while he awaits a medical consultation for some knee surgery. Next Monday, Fr. Tom Westhoven's nephew, Adam Hertzfeld, a seminarian studying in Rome, will join us in Westville for 10 days or so. Then, another visitor after that for ten days too. We will not be getting bored..."
