Summary

Jerzy Deptula (GA) & Claudio Siebenaler (CU)
The final day was truly one long wrap up session in which the delegates shared what was going on in their provinces. Special interest was shown to the plan of France and Luxembourg to fuse their provinces beginning in May of 1999. The delegates were interested as well in the process going on among SCJs in North America.

In addition, provinces reported on things going on in their area which might be of interest to the congregation. Fr. Zorzetti (AU) reported on the situation in Uruguay, and the discussion among Latin American scjs of setting up "prophetic zones" rather then "prophetic communities" in light of the secular situation in that country. Several other areas of Latin America are under consideration for this status, such as Mata Grosso and the new foundation in Ecuador. His report will be published on our news site at some future date.

Meeting Notes

Fr. General's introductory talk given at the opening session has been translated into French and English. It is also available in the original Italian. (cf. Opening Address).

During the course of the ten day meeting the delegate from the Democratic Republic of the Congo spoke of the of the situation in there. The three superiors of North America at the urging of the General Superior suggested a three step approach which was adopted by the assembly:

  • Write a letter to our confreres in the Congo expressing our solidarity and support
  • Write a letter to the congregation urging them to unite with our brothers in the Congo and proclaiming November 30, 1998 as an International Dehonian Day of Solidarity with the people of the Congo.
  • Suggest Dehonians around the world write their government leaders to urge them to bring about a peaceful

  • settlement to the situation so that the people can live in peace and improve the quality of their lives.
A sample letter is provided. [Note the English translation of the letter to the scjs in the Congo will be posted tomorrow, 14 - 11 - 98.]

Aloísio Back (PHI)

We have solved our technical difficulties and are posting the reflection offered by Aloísio Back (BM), who is superior of the SCJ Philippine Community. He currently works in the formation program along with Eduardo Agüero (AU) at Cagayan de Oro (cf. Aloísio Back)

Today's reflection was not ready in time for posting. Since this is the last day of the Superiors Meeting we will post it to this site when it is completed. The reflection is offered by Peter McKenna (CA).

Finally, Fr. Oliviero Girardi, postulator of causes, gave a brief report of the status of Fr. Dehon's cause. With the Church's declaration of Fr. Dehon as "Venerable" the next step is the verification of a miracle. Fr. Girardi reminded those present that we must not forget the cause of Fr. André Prevot. In 1923, just two years before his own death Fr. Dehon,, encouraged members of the congregation to pursue the cause of Fr. André.

The case is currently in the hands of the historical experts at the Vatican. This step could take several years to complete. Fr. Girardi commissioned a portrait (pictured below)of Fr. André. Members of the assembly were given the opportunity to order copies at the cost of 100,000 lira. (The edition is limited to 200 copies.)
