The office of the General Secretary has prepared a list of the "country of origin" of scjs, i.e., birth place, based on the December 31, 1999 end of the year statistics. s. Paziente at 'tombola'

In December we published the news that Sister Paziente was in the hospital receiving treatment for a tumor discovered in her mouth. Many scjs who knew Sister Paziente from their days at the International College in Rome responded by sending her get well cards and letters.

On 14 January Sister Paziente had a medical checkup and it appears all is well. She feels fine and has not had any more difficulties. In June she must return for a final checkup. She feels completely recovered, and believes this is due to our prayers.

Sister Paziente would like to pass on the following message to all those who sent cards and letters, but especially for their prayers. She writes: "I want to say thanks to God, Mary and the Founder p. Dehon, because I have received a great grace, for it seems all is well! Yes, indeed a great grace, and I am sure that it will continue to go well. I am still here at Pedrera Tower and feel just fine."

Dehon Photo of the Week

In 1889 Fr. Dehon notes in his Notes Quotidiennes : "April, 8-9. Ecuador. I've accompanied to Paris our four missionaries, who will leave for Quito the fathers Sebastian and Bruno, the brothers Anschaire and Benedict Labre. We prayed together in Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre and in Notre Dame de Victoire. They left full of joy and very generous."

Br. Benedict Labre was the first brother to leave for the missions. So begins this week's commentary by Stefano Tertünte, continuing the theme began last week, the role of brothers in the early days of the congregation (CF. Br. Benedict Labre).

Dehon in Canada and America
September 24 brings us to Vancouver where we stayed with the Oblate Fathers. It's an unusual city where Chinese, Japanese and Indians rub elbows. (41) The city is one endless waterfront between the mainland and the island of the same name. Like so many others, it's a boom town, having grown from 2,000 to 70,000 in the past twenty years....

Fr. Dehon has finally arrived on the west coast of Canada. He ends his tour in Vancouver, today one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We also present the first part of his reflections and notes on Canada (cf. Vancouver).
